MSI Crosshair 16 HX Drops to $1,399 at Walmart — RTX 5070 and i9-14900HX for Under $1,400

If you're hunting for a gaming laptop that won't make your wallet file a missing person report, this MSI Crosshair 16 HX at Walmart is worth a look. It's marked down to $1,399 — a 39% discount — and the spec sheet reads like a much pricier machine. We're talking a 14th-gen Intel Core i9, NVIDIA's RTX 5070, and a 240Hz QHD+ screen. That's a lot of hardware for the money, but there are a couple of trade-offs you should know about before you hit buy.

What You're Getting for $1,399

The headline here is the combination of an i9-14900HX and an RTX 5070. That's a seriously potent pairing for 1440p gaming — the i9 has plenty of cores for CPU-heavy titles and multitasking, while the RTX 5070 should handle most modern games at high settings on the QHD+ panel without breaking a sweat.

The display is another strong point: a 16-inch QHD+ IPS panel with a 240Hz refresh rate. That's a great balance of sharpness and speed, and it's the kind of screen you'd normally expect on laptops costing several hundred dollars more.

The Trade-Offs: RAM and Storage

Here's where MSI cut some corners to hit this price. The 16GB of DDR5 RAM is adequate for gaming, but if you're planning to stream, edit video, or keep a dozen Chrome tabs open while playing, you might want to upgrade down the line. Same goes for the 512GB SSD — it's on the small side for a gaming rig, especially with how large modern game installs have become.

The good news is that both are usually upgradeable on MSI's Crosshair line, so you're not stuck. Just factor in the cost of a RAM or SSD upgrade if you need more headroom.

Is This a Good Deal?

At $1,399, you're getting a lot of performance per dollar. Comparable laptops with an RTX 5070 and a 240Hz QHD+ screen often sell for $1,600 and up, so this is a solid discount. The 39% off figure suggests Walmart is clearing inventory, which means the price could bounce back up once stock runs out.

If you're in the market for a desktop replacement that can handle high-refresh gaming and some content creation, this is a compelling option. Just be ready to add more storage sooner rather than later.
